On a beautiful and sunny Earth Day in late April, Rice Camp Senior Housing in Līhuʻe, Kauaʻi, flourished with a celebration of community spirit, environmental stewardship and intergenerational collaboration. Councilmember Bulosan, members of the Turo community, and Better Block Hawaiʻi joined local residents and volunteers for a meaningful tree planting event that promises to leave a lasting legacy.

The event was marked by a sense of unity and purpose as residents of Rice Camp Senior Housing welcomed energetic volunteers and partners. The kūpuna, or elders, expressed great enthusiasm for the newly planted fruit trees and native plants. They spoke in excitement about using the flowers and foliage for crafting lei and enjoying the plentiful fruit, such as calamansi. The new trees will also provide shade and enhance the overall aesthetic of the community, making a tangible difference in the daily lives of the residents.

Turo brought its commitment to sustainability and community enhancement to the forefront.  Volunteers from Turo and local Turo hosts participated in planting trees, demonstrating the car sharing community’s dedication to making a positive impact beyond providing economic and transportation opportunities in Kauaʻi. Turo’s involvement also underscores the importance of corporate responsibility and community engagement in fostering environmental stewardship.

The Earth Day celebration at Rice Camp Senior Housing is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when individuals, organizations, and communities unite for a common cause. The event is also an expression of environmental stewardship and community collaboration, demonstrating that together, we can build a sustainable future.
