An open letter to Governor Cuomo
Dear Governor Cuomo,
New York is known as the Empire State for a reason. As you’ve said yourself, New Yorkers are “bridge builders,” finding opportunities for connection, collaboration, and innovation even in the toughest of times. Creativity and the ability to adapt to challenging situations are in New York’s DNA, and tapping into those values will be critical to the economic and societal recovery from COVID-19.
We believe peer-to-peer car sharing can help. Allowing New Yorkers to share their cars will give them the chance to earn income from an asset they already own, and help to offset the cost of car ownership, healthcare, or other basic needs. On average, Turo hosts earn $700/month sharing their vehicles. During a time of economic uncertainty with over 800,000 unemployment filings throughout the state, New Yorkers deserve every opportunity to do the same.
Unfortunately, New Yorkers are the only people in the nation unable to share their vehicles with neighbors and travelers looking for a safe, affordable mobility option. The over 720,000 New Yorkers who have already signed up to use Turo await the chance.
As you work with the impressive team you’ve assembled to tackle this challenge in collaboration with the other states in your region who already allow peer-to-peer car sharing, we urge you to consider the opportunity New Yorkers can find with Turo. We know it will be a long road ahead, but we also know there are many willing to share their cars to help get us there. It’s the New York way.
Sincerely,
Turo
